Why tradesmen should consider asbestos awareness training.

Why tradesmen should consider asbestos awareness training.

Posted on Sunday 31st August 2014 by Graham

Asbestos awareness and training in and around the subject of is an increasingly growing and bourgeoning area of expertise. As the years pass and we become more knowledgeable into the dangers of this deadly substance, your education and your knowledge around asbestos becomes more and more significant in order to keep yourself and those that work with and for you as safe as is possible.

This is why we exist; this is why we at asbestos training limited are as committed as we are into providing you with the very best in awareness and training in order to keep your workplace safe and, most crucially, those that work within the confides of your professional environment.

However, we understand that simply taking our word at face value isn’t quite as credible without something of substance and of depth to back this up. So we’ve gone into a bit of detail about how and why continuing to ignore the need to educate yourself and others in asbestos awareness should be high on your list of priorities.

One of the most dangerous substances ever used

Asbestos is responsible for the deaths of over 4500 people every year. Among those 4500 are approximately 1000 tradesman - that’s 20 a week - that die every year as a result of their regular exposure to the deadly substance.

Electricians, plumbers, painters and decorators are all professions that lend themselves to the possibility of working in, around and extremely closely to areas and zones in which the possibility of contamination is high.

These very facts alone are enough to know that one should take the concept of awareness within asbestos extremely seriously and aim to educate everyone working within your environment of its dangers how to protect oneself and others from exposure and how to properly handle the material should anyone find themselves in danger of coming into contact with the substance.

The Law

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 applies to employers, employees, self-employed persons and duty holders. This is a European directive whereby anyone working amid areas of asbestos exposure is required to provide documentation like notification of work, medical surveillance and detailed record keeping as a means of protection to all members of staff.

Without following these measures sanctions are likely to be upheld and HSE (The Health and Safety Executive) warn that exposing those untrained and without certification in asbestos awareness and or training will face penalties. They state that "electrical contracting companies and other building and refurbishment trades must provide suitable asbestos awareness training to employees or face prosecution."

Fines have been readily handed out over the years by magistrates to companies who’ve failed to comply and ensure their employees had received asbestos awareness training thus breaching laws and regulations set in place.

Don’t let this be you. Asbestos Training Limited have a range of courses to suit you and your employees and ensure that your company stays on the right side of the law and avoids the needlessness of unnecessary sanction.

Knowledge is power

Putting yourself, your colleagues and your staff in a much stronger position in regards to one’s health and safety as well as the health and safety of everyone around you, will have the knock-on effect of making everyone much more capable of doing their jobs.

The fear of not knowing how to handle possible exposure will be taken away and the fear of having staff using incorrect procedures will also be lessened if these small educational measures are taken. Not a lot to ask in order to make the working environment a more seamless and efficient environment.

People who work in the trades are the most at risk of exposure; with 20 deaths per week – 4 plumbers, 6 electricians and 8 joiners (source: HSE) – so it is therefore more important than ever that you as an employee and or an employer look towards educating yourself and giving you the tools to hugely decrease the risks associated with working in and around asbestos.
